‘drainfly’ is a folk post-punk band based in London. The band storytell through their haunting ambience, heavy distortions, industrial drums and airy vocals. Inspired through folklore and life stories the band blur the lines between nature and modern life. Their DIY aesthetic uses a collage of discarded materials in an array of various artworks that can be seen throughout their current media. The band has gained audiences across the UK by distributing free art magazines (zines) in small record shops and gig venues alongside their London performances. For us, art is a vessel for the storytelling in 'drainflys' music.
The band was formed in Bristol 2021 as 'Afraid of the Dark', by Gwen Sutterby, Ben-Lui Simpkins, Joe Phillips and Louis Webb. A move to London brought Jasper Gatfield (Reading) to the drums and Samuel Black (Southampton) to bass guitar along with the name change to ‘drainfly’.
The band's ambient grunge sound has gathered audiences for moody performances at venues such as 'Jaguar Shoes' and 'Windmill Brixton'.

who are these drain people?
The drain people live the pipes of our drains, they are housemates with the drainflies. They are the mould in your forgotten crockery and the limescale of your walls. They clog up your drains with forgotten furniture decorating their rooms with your bedroom clutter. Living in the little natures of suburbia. We hear the drain folk’s music from our drains and play it for you to listen to.
